The Best Stock Scanners for Day Trading in 2026
Named to the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies six years in a row (2017–2022).
Investopedia: Best Short Term Stock Screener, 2024
The short answer: For day trading, speed at the open decides the trade. Trade Ideas is our pick because Streaming Alerts can fire on every trade, multiple times per second — for momentum runs, halts and opening-range breaks, not on the next refresh. Holly AI Signals add intraday ideas with an entry, a stop and a target on TI Premium (Apex). If you would rather build every scan yourself next to news and filings, look at Scanz. Warrior Trading students may prefer Day Trade Dash.
Written by Daniel Mirkin, CEO of Trade Ideas, which makes one of the tools compared here.
Quick picks for day traders
- First to see momentum, halts and the open: Trade Ideas.
- New to day trading, premium from day one: Trade Ideas, with ready-made channels and the free live Trading Room.
- Scans you build yourself, with news: Scanz.
- Warrior Trading students: Day Trade Dash.
- Headline-driven trades: Benzinga Pro.
- Penny stocks plus a training library: StocksToTrade.
- Lowest monthly cost: TC2000 or Finviz Elite. Free for Schwab clients: thinkorswim.
Five things a day-trading scanner has to do
- Speed. A move at 9:31 is old news by 9:35. Ask whether a stock appears when the event happens, or on the next refresh.
- Premarket into the open. Gaps form before the bell. The scanner should carry you from the premarket into the first minutes, such as a 5-minute opening range breakout. For the morning prep itself, see the best premarket scanners.
- Halts. Small caps halt often. A halt alert and a resume alert tell you when trading stops and starts again.
- Small caps. Filters for float, price and relative volume separate a real move from a thin one.
- Intraday alerts. The day doesn't end at 10 a.m. Alerts such as high relative volume and unusual number of prints catch late movers.
Real-time scanners (Trade Ideas, Scanz, Day Trade Dash) pass the speed test by design. Screeners on a timer (Finviz Elite, TradingView, TC2000, TrendSpider) refresh every few seconds to every few hours, depending on plan.
A scanner is one part of the setup. For charts, signals, paper trading and order entry, see the best day trading software. For screeners that update every 15 seconds, see the best real-time stock screeners.
How we compared
At 9:31, a scanner is either early or late. We ran all 10 tools through the same 8 questions, one per table column.
- What it is: Event scanner, timed screener, or both.
- Real-time data: Can alerts fire on every trade (even multiple times per second), and on which plan?
- Scans and alerts: Can it push halts, breakouts and momentum to you?
- Backtesting: Can you replay a setup on history, code-free?
- AI: What the AI does, as the vendor puts it.
- Beginner-friendly: Ready-made scans, coaching, a free trial.
- Price: Monthly and yearly list price, straight from the vendor.
- Best for: The day trader it fits.

The 10 best stock scanners for day trading
-
1. Trade Ideas
Trade Ideas watches every U.S. stock while it trades and tells you the moment something happens. For a day trader, that is the gap between catching a move and reading about it later.
Premarket to the bell. Alerts run from the premarket through the close on Trade Ideas live market data. Top Lists rank the gappers and re-sort as they trade. By 9:30 you already know who is leading.
The open, as it prints. 5-minute opening range breakouts and Running Up Now flag the first real moves. Halt and Resume tell you when trading stops and starts again. Behind them sit 310 alerts and 249 filters.
Every window of the open. The opening range set runs at 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes, with a breakdown for each breakout. Through the session, alerts such as a 10-minute MACD crossing its signal line or a 5-minute 1-2-3 sell signal fire the moment they happen. All 310 alerts can be combined with any of the 249 filters, each set by min and max, and 191 of the alerts take a setting of their own, such as the minimum dollar move on Running Up Now. Count one alert with two filters and you get 9,571,560 pairings; once values are set, the scans are effectively unlimited.
No setup on day one. No matter the plan, you get the Channel Bar in TI Pro. Click a ready-made channel such as Big Momentum Movers, and the windows are built for you. Holly AI Assistant, also in every TI Pro plan, builds anything else from your own words.
Ideas with a plan attached. Holly AI Signals land during the session with an entry, a stop and a target. Holly goes after large, long-term potential winners, so you decide whether to take profits that day or keep the position. After the close, OddsMaker replays your scan on Trade Ideas history with your own entry, stop and exit. Both are on TI Premium.
Practice with a mentor in the room. The free Trading Room is open each market day, with Barrie Einarson leading. Stock Races let you feel the speed of the open before you trade it.
Price: TI Standard is billed at $127 monthly or $1,068 yearly. TI Premium is billed at $254 monthly or $2,136 yearly.
Worth knowing: Trade Ideas covers U.S.-listed stocks. Its options data is limited to volume-based filters. On a Mac, use the browser-based web Dashboard, which needs no download; Streaming Alerts need TI Pro, which runs on Windows.
Best for: Active traders who want the first look at a move with a tested plan behind it, and new day traders who want the premium experience.

Which day-trading scanner fits how you trade
Small-cap momentum
Float, relative volume and halt alerts matter most. Trade Ideas covers all three in live windows. Day Trade Dash and StocksToTrade also focus on small caps.
Large caps and ETFs
You need live prints on liquid names. Trade Ideas Streaming Alerts and Scanz both run on real-time data.
News traders
Benzinga Pro puts headlines and audio squawk next to its scanner. Scanz adds news and SEC filing scans.
Warrior Trading students
Day Trade Dash comes with 24 preset scanners and member pricing. See Trade Ideas vs Day Trade Dash.
Schwab clients
thinkorswim costs nothing for Schwab clients. It includes Stock Hacker scans and paperMoney for practice.
Swing trades on the side
A Streaming Alert or a Holly signal can open a position you keep for weeks. Holly AI Signals are designed for large, long-term potential winners. The exit is your call.
Pick Trade Ideas if you want intraday ideas handed to you and the tools to build your own. Holly's signals and OddsMaker both sit on TI Premium; every signal states its entry, stop and target. Any plan lets you ask the AI Assistant for a scan, combine 310 alerts and 249 filters with no code, or write a custom filter in the Formula Editor.
Do you need a paid scanner to day trade?
Not to learn. A free tool is enough to learn the basics. Finviz's free version uses delayed quotes. Screener auto-refresh is not listed for TradingView's free Basic plan. thinkorswim costs nothing for Schwab clients.
Day trades often play out in minutes. A delayed or slow list can show you a stock after the move has started. That is the main reason day traders pay for real-time scanning.
The paid tools on this list are priced in the table above. TI Standard is $127 a month, or $1,068 a year, and includes paper trading. Practice there first, so you know what you need before you add more.
Who Trade Ideas is not for
Trade Ideas is built for traders who need the move while it is happening. Here is when that speed goes unused.
- You trade crypto, forex or futures only. Trade Ideas covers U.S.-listed stocks.
- You work from end-of-day data. Plenty of traders only need daily bars, and that is fine.
- The subscription costs too much relative to your account. Free tools and paper trading make a better starting point.

Best stock scanners for day trading: FAQ
What is the best stock scanner for day trading?
Trade Ideas is our pick, because its Streaming Alerts can fire on every trade — multiple times per second — for momentum, halts and opening-range breaks. We make it, so judge it yourself: open a free account for the free web dashboards, or see the plans. Scanz is the closest real-time alternative, Day Trade Dash suits Warrior Trading students, and Benzinga Pro suits news-driven traders.
How fast does a day-trading scanner need to be?
Fast enough to show a move while you can still act on it. Event-driven scanners report a stock when the event happens. Timed screeners refresh on a schedule, anywhere from every few seconds to every few hours, by tool and plan.
Which stock scanners alert on trading halts?
Trade Ideas has a Halt alert and a Resume alert, and Day Trade Dash lists a Halt scanner among its 24 presets. Most pricing pages we checked did not list halt alerts, so look at each tool's feature page.
What is the best scanner for small-cap momentum?
Pick one with float, price and relative volume filters plus halt alerts, and Trade Ideas has all of them. Day Trade Dash and StocksToTrade also focus on small caps. Rehearse any setup in paper trading before real money is on the line.
Do I need to build my own scans to day trade with Trade Ideas?
No. Ready-made channels on the Channel Bar and Holly AI Assistant come with TI Pro on every plan, so you can trade the open without building anything. When you want to customize, 310 alerts and 249 filters are there.
Can I use Trade Ideas for swing trading too?
Yes. Holly AI Signals fire intraday, yet they are designed for large, long-term potential winners, so holding is your call. Every signal carries an entry, a stop and a target, which makes a longer hold easy to plan.
